The aim of this chapter is to present some materials that users can consider when they are working directly with the family. It begins with some theoretical and conceptual issues which help users to become familiar with contemporary understandings of the family. This chapter also explores ethical, legal and spiritual issues that might emerge when working with the family. While users should already be familiar with a range of communication and interaction skills, this chapter introduces them to specific interaction skills that can be useful when engaging in family work. Finally this chapter considers some issues relating to peer and social support.
